It is extremely easy to start, because it requires no expensive equipment. You might have all the ingredients in your house.
The system is analog, unplugged and low-tech.
What you need:
-
- A box. Any box. A shoebox will do. Size of the box depends on the size of your note cards. Many office stores have filing boxes from cheap to deluxe. Your choice.
-
- Index cards. Both 3×5 or 4×6 work and it depends what you are putting in the box. (Vladimir Nabokov wrote Lolita on 3×5 index cards.) Dot grid cards are fabulous for doodling and writing, but they are hard to come by.
Index cards can be cut to size, but heavy paper is recommended.

-
- Tabs: Can be paper or plastic or cut from an old cereal box. They come in colorful assortments and the design depends on how important packaging is for you.
-
- And, of course pens and pencils. I recommend colored pencils. Three colors will do. Those are for visual note taking. If you can draw a dot and a line, you can draw a note. More on that later.
Now let’s start.
